Information

Driving is the most dangerous thing we do and we do it every day!

  • Someone is injured every 18 seconds
  • Someone dies in a crash every 11 minutes
  • The most common cause of death is a motor vehicle accident
  • Louisiana ranks 5th for the worst fatality record in the nation

Alternative Home Care expects high standards of performance including safe driving. Why? Because it is possible, cost effective and the right thing to do.

The 3 most common causes of motor vehicle accidents are:

  1. Distracted Driving. This includes texting and talking on your cell phone, putting on make-up and reaching to get something in the backseat.
  2. Speeding
  3. Driving while intoxicate (DWI)

Everyone should obey the rules of the road. This can be done by using your turn single when changing lanes. Driving the speed limit, reading road signs and passing with care.

When making lane changes:

  • Check to make sure there is enough room
  • Use your turn signal
  • Check your blind spot
  • Make the lane change

Before you begin driving you should do a pre-trip inspection of your vehicle. Check to make sure windows are clean. Do you see any fluid leaks on the ground? Check your tires for tread wear. Make sure you have current inspection sticker, auto insurance and license plate.

When you are inside the vehicle:

  • Check and adjust mirrors
  • Adjust headrest
  • Check your gages
  • Check window and windshields to make sure vision is not blocked
  • Be sure you are emotionally ready to focus on your driving

The first thing every driver should do when getting into the vehicle is to fasten their seatbelts. Then you should make sure that everyone in the vehicle is wearing their seatbelts securely.

Many drivers can be distracted by emotions such as anger or shocking news. Whenever your vehicle is moving your attention should be on the road and traffic at all times.

Nearly every intersection accident is caused by failure to yield the right of way. You must yield to the vehicle on your right if you arrive at an intersection at the same time as another vehicle.

It is illegal to follow any emergency vehicle closer than 500 feet. You should immediately move to the right of your lane, to anther lane or to the should if possible. If moving right is not possible stay where you are do not move left.

Everyone is required to keep their drivers license and insurance updated. If you have a lapse in your car insurance the Department of Motor Vehicles will charge you a fine for the lapse in your car insurance.
