Everybody’s fighting some kind of stereotype. Individuals with disabilities are no exception. The difference is that barriers individuals with disabilities face begin with people’s attitudes! These are just a few myths to consider.
MYTH #1
Individuals with disabilities are sick or have something wrong with them.
The fact is: Disabilities are a natural part of life and are not the same as being sick. Individuals with disabilities have a variety of needs and are sometimes sick, just like anyone without disabilities.
MYTH #2
Individuals with disabilities have a poor quality of life.
The fact is: The attitude that having a disability is a bad thing and means poor living conditions is more disabling than the disability itself. Individuals with disabilities need people just like people without disabilities do. More theaters, restaurants, homes, etc. need to be built to allow individuals with disabilities more freedom to go to a wider group of places.
MYTH #3
Individuals with disabilities are courageous and brave.
The fact is: Individuals with disabilities are adapting to a lifestyle.
MYTH #4
Individuals with disabilities are unhealthy.
The fact is: They must work towards a healthy lifestyle just like everyone else. Their real issue is about being a good citizen and defending their rights.
MYTH #5
Individuals with disabilities need protection from harsh realities of life because they are emotionally weak.
The fact is: Individuals with disabilities are making adjustments every day to difficult situations, some that individuals without disabilities face only in a crisis. The important fact is individuals with disabilities adapt.
MYTH #6
Individuals with disabilities are different from ‘normal’ people.
The fact is: Individuals with disabilities think, feel and act along the same lines as other people.
